Cockroaches In Your Area
Before doing anything, you’ll want to learn more about the cockroach species in your area. Which cockroaches will you likely encounter? You’ll find out below.
German Cockroaches
German cockroaches will likely try to enter your home at some point. They’re problematic and can quickly infest a dwelling since females will produce as many as 30 to 40 eggs at once. During her lifetime, she can produce up to 5 egg capsules. Suffice to say, the infestation is going to worsen rapidly. These cockroaches can reach up to 5/8s of an inch. If you have German cockroaches in your home, you’ll likely find them around your warm appliances. Although they have wings, German cockroaches usually do not fly.
American Cockroaches
Although they’re known as American cockroaches, they’ll still impact our service area. These cockroaches are large with some of the biggest reaching 2 inches in length. They are reddish-brown and can live several years. One thing to note is that they’re not going to infest your dwelling rapidly. In fact, they generally do not infest dwellings. Instead, they like staying outside and close to broken sewer pipes. If you’ve found these cockroaches on your property, you likely have a sewer problem somewhere. You should check your property carefully to find out what is going on.
These are two of the most common cockroaches in our service area, but they’re not around. There is also a chance that you’re going to encounter the following species.
Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches
If you looked at female and male Pennsylvania wood cockroaches, you likely wouldn’t think they belonged to the same species. They look significantly different. In adulthood, males can reach an inch in length and they have full wings. Females have short wings and they only grow up to three-quarters of an inch. These cockroaches can live in our area, but they generally do not reproduce indoors. If you find them on your property, it might have something to do with the woodpile on your property. Alternatively, they’re attracted to wood siding, wood shingles, and blocked gutters.
Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches
Spotted Mediterranean cockroaches are smaller than most other cockroaches since they only reach a third of an inch. They’re tan with dark speckles on their backs. These cockroaches are native to Europe, but they’ve been impacting people in our service area for the last few years. They typically do not enter residential dwellings and prefer staying outside. Even if they sneak inside, they’re not going to mate and reproduce in your home. They are often found in the foliage outside of your home.
Oriental Cockroaches
You may encounter Oriental cockroaches are some point, but you may not. These cockroaches are large since the biggest members of the species can reach an inch and a quarter. Males and females are different because males have wings and females do not. These cockroaches behave a lot like American cockroaches. They prefer infesting sewer systems, but they can be found in old rundown buildings as well. These cockroaches can handle the cold exceptionally well so you might find them outside by your trashcans.
Smokey brown Cockroaches
Smokey brown cockroaches can reach over an inch in length, so they’re one of the biggest species in our area. They’re reddish-brown and are rarely found here. They can live in our area if they make it here though. They often hitch a ride in shipping packages and containers. Still, you likely won’t have to worry about combating a smokey brown cockroach infestation anytime soon.
Surinam Cockroaches
Surinam cockroaches reach three-quarters of an inch and have light tan wings. You likely aren’t going to find these cockroaches in your area since they prefer warm climates. If they are on your property, you’ll find them in a warm greenhouse. Each member of this species is female. There are no male Surinam cockroaches.
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are half an inch in length, and they’re often compared to German cockroaches. Both look similar, but German cockroaches have racing stripes. Brown-banded cockroaches do not. You might find brown-banded cockroaches on your property, but they likely won’t enter your home.
